McKinney-Vento (Educational Support Services for homeless youth)

McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act guarantees rights and services for homeless students

The Detroit Lakes Public Schools can help if you live in any of the following situations:

  • in a shelter, motel, vehicle or campground
  • on the street
  • in an abandoned building, trailer or other inadequate space
  • with friends or relatives because you cannot find or afford housing
  • in a temporary foster care placement

We offer the following educational support services:

  • registration information
  • assist with student enrollment
  • support parents with efforts to maintain current school placement throughout period of transition
  • access to food programs
  • direct certification for free school meals
  • ensure students receive all special programs and services as provided to all other students
  • when available, provide funding to assist students wanting to participate in ISD 22 sponsored extracurricular activities
