Driver Education

Steps to Getting Your Driver's License in Minnesota

The state of Minnesota enlists a Graduated License Program for new drivers. Drivers under 18 years of age must take a state-approved driver education course and be enrolled in behind-the-wheel driver training before applying for a Minnesota instruction permit.

Minnesota Farm Work License

Farming is an important part of life in Minnesota. Students who are applying for the FWL must complete 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel.  They do not have to hold the instruction permit for 6 months before taking the road test, but they must be at least 15.  They are required to log 40 or 50 hours of driving time, 15 hours at night, before taking the road test.

Parents must fill out an affidavit, available at all driver license examination stations, and present a property tax statement and/or rental agreement.
