Young Artist/Young Writers Competition

The Young Artist Young Writers competition is held yearly in February.  Any student can enter American Indian Cultural related items in specific categories with a chance to win cash prizes.  Entries are limited to two per category.  Awards banquets are held at Roosevelt Elementary School for the elementary age students and at the M-State Campus for grades 6-12. 

ELEMENTARY CATEGORIES:   Division I grades K-2/Division II grades 3-5  

No more than 2 entries per category - All entries must have something to do with American Indian (AI) Culture  


I. ART COMPETITION:  (THREE CATEGORIES) 
  1.  Drawing - Black and White
  2.  Drawing- Colored 
  3.  Painting/Coloring 
II. CREATIVE WRITING: (TWO CATEGORIES) 
1. Short story- write at least half a page dealing with a topic about American Indian Culture (fiction or nonfiction)  
2. Poem – write a poem dealing with an American Indian Topic
 
III. CRAFT - Beadwork, leatherwork, sewing, dream catchers, etc.  
 
IV.  PHOTOGRAPHY - No more than 2 photos: Pictures of nature, wild animals, plants, places, people etc.  
 
MS/HS (6-12) CATEGORIES - OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS IN MN:  

The categories are:
I. ART COMPETITION:  (FIVE CATEGORIES) 
1. Paint - oil, acrylics, or watercolor 
2. Drawing - black and white  
3. Drawing - colored  
4. Sculpture - pottery, ceramics, glass, metal, wood, or paper medium 
5. Computer Art - must be made on a computer

II. CRAFTS COMPETITION:  (FIVE CATEGORIES)  
1. Beadwork 
2. Leatherwork-Sewing - that depicts traditional American Indian Culture.  Must be original and authentic.  
3. Yarn and Dowel  
4. Dream Catchers 
5. Wood-Basketry

III. CREATIVE WRITING:  [All entries must be TYPED] (THREE CATEGORIES) 
1.  Poetry 
2.  Short Stories - 300 words or less  
3.  Essay - Over 300 words

IV. PHOTOGRAPHY: (NATURE OUTDOOR) This is our newest category. We’re looking for outdoor nature pictures, which can include non-domestic animals, all plants, sun, moon, etc.

V. HAND DRUM: Hand Drum maximum of 1 person, this has to be a solo with drumming and singing. Songs must be at a minimum of 30 seconds and no longer than 5 minutes.  MUST BE both AUDIO/VISUAL ENTRY. Students must do all the preparing, recording, etc. Submit entries to jcarrier@detlakes.k12.mn.us.

VI. GROUP DRUM: Group drum consists of two or more students with drumming and singing. Songs must be a minimum of 30 seconds and no longer than 5 minutes. MUST BE AUDIO AND VISUAL BOTH. Students must do all the preparing, recording, etc. Submit entries to jcarrier@detlakes.k12.mn.us.
